The Alliance of International Doctors embarked on a mission in 2017 with the motto, “Now is the Time to See Beauty.” Since then, we have impacted thousands of lives through 80,000 cataract surgeries across 21 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
We remain committed to this cause and aim to reach a milestone of 100,000 cataract surgeries by performing 20,000 additional surgeries.
Cataracts, which cause vision loss due to the clouding of the eye’s lens, can be treated with a straightforward 15-minute surgical procedure. Unfortunately, millions globally are unable to access this simple treatment due to a lack of facilities, qualified healthcare professionals, and financial resources.
Consequently, those without access to treatment often face a life of dependence on others.
According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2019 report, 2.2 billion people worldwide experience visual impairment, with 1 billion cases being preventable or treatable. Cataracts are a leading cause of these impairments, affecting approximately 94 million people and accounting for 51% of all blindness cases globally. Factors contributing to cataracts include malnutrition, aging, prolonged exposure to intense light, eye trauma, and inflammation. The absence of appropriate medical care and financial support often leads to a loss of independence for many individuals.
Millions of people around the world live their lives in darkness due to a disease that can be treated with a simple surgery due to technical and financial impossibilities. As the International Doctors Association, we are working to fight cataract disease and open the eyes of these people.
